Up to date news in May

May 2016

8 months in and we have sung over 30 different songs in 3 seasons and shared our fires with around 40 different people. A non-performing group we have nonetheless found ourselves leading fire-y singing at the Winter Solstice and to support Refugee Action. We have been given 8 beautiful evenings and each time find our voices entwined with birch and sweet chestnut as we sing up to the sky and down through our roots. Dripping twigs from days of rain, frosty earth and both cloudy and clear skies have been ours – and, through the six months of Autumn and Winter, we have been more than blessed by the moon!

It seems a good time to look back and forwards and I invite you to share your thoughts with me too so that this FireChoir is a group that really serves us all well. I really enjoy the love and enthusiasm each of you has brought to the group and the amazing sounds we make just by mixing our voices together.

I am in the privileged position of being able to choose and sing the songs I like! I would love to know which songs particularly resonate with you and if there are any you would like included – just drop me a message or talk to me! It’s not always possible but often a harmony can be written to go with a good song! I try to keep our singing pulsing with the year too so some winter favourites will be back when it gets dark again.

In April I realised it was light enough to enjoy a bit of natural fire lighting. If you fancy knowing more about how the fire works and would like to kindle it with your breath from a tiny spark just let me know and we’ll make it happen over the next few months – you may need to come along a bit early so that we have plenty of time.

When I started the group in September I thought the £5 charge would cover my costs. It doesn’t! so from June I am raising the charge to £8 with a view to £10 from December. I hope this doesn’t get in the way of a good sing for everybody.

Here are some happenings for the next few months:

19 May FireChoir! at Highwoods Country Park 7pm – 9pm

20 – 22 May Little Ropers Fest. One of our members, Ellie Mead, is have a wee

festival on her farm to celebrate her birthday. I have offered to lead a bit of singing round the camp fire and any members of FireChoir! who would like to come along and join in the fun are very welcome J Thank you Ellie!!!

16 June FireChoir! at Highwoods Country Park 7pm – 9.30pm. This is the sing nearest to the Summer Solstice. As we did with the Winter Solstice I suggest we finish a little bit later and maybe share some sunshine-y cake and a longer chat. We will sing some summery songs and be done by 9.30pm.

21 July` FireChoir! at Highwoods Country Park 7pm – 9pm.

4 – 7 August Harlequin Fayre, Norfolk. This is a fab festival – small with a lovely gentle vibe. I have offered some natural voice workshops. If you fancy a good eco-fest this summer, check this out: http://www.harlequinfayre.co.uk/

12 August Charter for Trees, Woods, and People, Combs Wood, Stowmarket 6pm – 8pm. Our member, Jo Atkins is the Education Officer for Combs Wood and is arranging an evening of story and song for this Charter. There will be storytelling, poetry from local school children and other goings on – including some singing! It’s free and details of the site are here: http://www.suffolkwildlifetrust.org/reserves/combs-wood

18 August FireChoir! at Highwoods Country Park 7pm – 9pm

15 Sept FireChoir! at Highwoods Country Park 7pm – 9pm. This will be our first anniversary so something lovely will happen I’m sure!

There are several people out in the west of the county who are unable to get across to Colchester so I’m hoping to start a sister group at Molly’s Wood, Sible Hedingham. If you know anyone living in the Halstead/Hedinghams/Thaxted area who might be interested please do put them in touch J

Thank you for being part of this and looking forward to singing with you!
